Croissant or granola ? Champagne or martini ? Chinese takeout or home-made meal? Every day we make hundreds of choices, some of which we deem important, like taking on a new position or moving, some we deem unimportant like our dinner menu. But are our choices really unimportant? When I decide to watch one more episode of my favorite series just a tad too late at night, I might tell myself, “oh it’s just another 25 minutes”, I’ll just sleep less tonight. But is it just? Because I know myself, 25 minutes of sleep deprivation means I will be crankier, hungrier, I will have a hard time focusing on my clients in the afternoon, I will graze while making dinner and I will procrastinate on my phone with evening chores, leaving my house in shambles and my sleep time out of whack from the extra screen time. Those 25 minutes of extra TV watching are also 25 minutes where I will not make love with my partner, and so instead of strengthening the relationship, releasing oxytocin and endorphins which will make for a good night and therefore a good day tomorrow, I will pick apart everything they do the next day , bark, be obnoxious and feel terrible about myself! The lack of self-confidence and self-love induced by this small choice will likely influence my decisions for the next couple of days as well.
See what one small bad choice can do to 2 or 3 days of my life? Is it worth it? So if you have big goals to achieve, personally, professionally, weigh carefully all the small decisions you make because they pave the road to accomplishment or to disappointment. Prioritize what will make you feel good such as good sleep, healthy foods, gentle exercise and kindness (that includes self-kindness). These matter tremendously! Good luck!
