This week a client was telling me how she formed a plan to move back to Europe by the end of 2024. She was going to downsize her business, which is tentacular and hard to manage, and take her family with her back to the old country where she is near relatives and old friends. She had it all planned, including the timing. After talking to her family, she realized that no one was on board with her or wanted to leave California. She felt very helpless and quite crushed. But when we talked about the situation, we put things into perspective. The end goal, moving back to Europe, is out of our control. So much can happen, good or bad (even terrible) and there is never any guarantee. However, getting rid of the aspects of her business which aren’t profitable and nurturing the parts that are, making is more profitable, more enjoyable and less strenuous, was within her control, by
1. Working on it every day
2. Trying to take the next right step (instead of looking at the top of the ladder)
3. Staying open to the good surprise’s life can have for us.
These actions make life feel much more manageable. My friend may or may not move back to Europe in 2024. It may happen faster than she thought, for good or bad, and it may happen later or never, because so much can happen between now and December 2024. But if her business is doing better and becomes easier to move with her, she puts all the right cards in her hand, no matter what happens, and she will feel like she achieved something either way. Because Man plans, God laughs!
